St. Patrick’s Day is coming up soon, and we should begin prepping for green beer and glitter green party hats – which I love so much. This holiday has a special meaning for me, beyond just a guaranteed good party. Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. My grandmother’s maiden name was Duffy, very Irish. Her home was filled with porcelain teacups which had shamrocks on them, other small knickknacks that immediately brought to mind the Emerald Isle. Touches of green here and there in a house that was filled with love. I remember as a child standing in my grandmother’s kitchen looking at cloth tapestry which hung on one of the walls. I had seen it so many times I memorized the country of Ireland that the tapestry outlined. The cities and towns all diagramed within the tightly woven threads. This connection to my grandmother through genetics and love allowed me to adopt a country of our heritage, tie me to the world rather than to just a small town in Vermont. Through her I am more than Irish on one day a year and I’ll enjoy the party with green beer and a fantastic green glitter hat knowing its good to be Irish, amongst others.
